Funeral services for Mildred Evelyn Hopkins Franklin, 94, of Greenville will be at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Deaton Funeral Home, Belmont, MS. She died, Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Washington Care Center, Greenville. Burial will be in Lindsey Cemetery, Dennis, MS. Arrangements are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville. Mrs. Franklin was born Mildred Evelyn Hopkins in Dennis, Mississippi on January 13, 1919. She and her late husband, Jesse Franklin moved to Greenville in the fifties. Mrs. Franklin was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville and received the honor of Presbyterian Woman of the Year in 1990. Mrs. Franklin received her Nursing Diploma from Northeast Mississippi Diploma Program in the 1940s and was employed by Dr. Leon Lenoir, Jr, Dr. Michael Cirilli and the late Dr. Robert E. Lee. During her nursing career, she was noted as “giving the best shot in Greenville”. She was an active member of the Mississippi Business and Professional Women’s club and served two terms as president. Upon retirement in 1984, Mrs. Franklin was presented the key to the city. After retirement she became active in the Greenville Garden Club, the Mental Health Association, and the Greenville Mall Striders Club. She and her husband moved to Leland in 2000 and after his death in 2003, she became a member of the First Baptist Church of Leland. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 4 sisters and her parents, Arthur and Mary Lou Hopkins. She is survived by her only child, Kay Franklin Prather and her “favorite” son-in-law Steve, two grandsons Jason and his wife Lauren, Justin and his wife Susan, and three grandchildren; Grace Anne, Emma Kate, and Emory. Mrs. Franklin will be missed by many. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Deaton Funeral Home in Belmont. Mrs. Franklin’s nephew, Lynn Raburn with Macedonian Missionary Service will officate. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Franklin may be remembered by donations to the Mississippi Delta Community College Foundation Nursing Excellence Fund.
