Susan Montgomery Barnes

Memorial services for Susan Montgomery Barnes, 90, of Ridgeland, MS and formerly of Greenville, MS will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at All Saints Episcopal Church, Inverness, MS.  She died Friday, March 8, 2013 at The Orchard in Ridgeland, MS, following a lengthy illness.  Burial will be in Greenville Cemetery under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville, MS.  She was born in Greenville and lived her early life in Inverness, MS.  She attended Ole Miss where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and was selected as a ‘Campus Beauty’.   She transferred to Agnes Scott in Atlanta, GA. where she met her future husband Thomas Barnes, who was a Pre-Med student at Emory University.  Susan and Thomas were married August 15, 1944 in Inverness  at her family home, ‘Oakhurst’.  They settled in Greenville where he practiced medicine for over 50 years, and both were active members at St. James Episcopal Church.   She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years.  She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She leaves behind her four children: Tommy Barnes (Carla) of Woodlands, TX, Fred Barnes of Madison, MS, Susan Barnes Clark of Ridgeland, MS and Jack Barnes of Oxford, MS; four grandchildren:  Kendal Barnes Bittick (Andrew) of Katy, TX, Brooke Barnes of Oxford, MS, Rachel Barnes of Baton Rouge, LA and Gipson Clark of Ridgeland, MS, and one great-grand child, Liam Bittick of Katy, TX. The family would especially like to thank the staff of “The Rose Garden”, in Ridgeland, for the wonderful care they took of Mrs. Barnes over the past few years. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at All Saints Episcopal Church, Inverness.  In lieu of flowers the family respectfully request that donations be made to St. James Episcopal Church or the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.
