Funeral services for Rivers Rice Catledge, 91, a resident of Wellington Place of Greenville and formerly of Hollandale will be at 11 o’clock on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at the Hollandale Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Salley conducting the services. She died at Wellington Thursday, March 21, after a brief illness. Burial will be in Hollandale Cemetery under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville. She grew up in Tallahatchie County the fourth child of six born to Roman Knott Rice and Effie Cox Rice. She graduated from Webb-Swan Lake School, Northwest Junior College, and Delta State Teacher’s College in Cleveland in May of 1943. In May of 1944 she married Richard Newton Catledge who was also from Tallahatchie County. They made their home in Greenville before moving to Panther Burn in 1959 where they reared their three girls. They moved to Hollandale in retirement in 1986. She was preceded in death by her parents and her five siblings, her husband of 64 years, her youngest daughter, Nell Rice Catledge, and her son-in-law Bill Vandevender. She moved to Wellington Place in Greenville in April 2010. She was a member of the Hollandale Baptist Church. Though she was a schoolteacher she spent her life as a homemaker who was totally devoted to her family and friends. She is survived by her daughters Ann Catledge Vandevender of Hollandale and Dale Catledge Alsup and husband Butch of Como, and grandchildren: Chris Milliorn, Angie M. Clayton, Mark Boykin, Sumer A. Dempsey, and Virgil Alsup, and 14 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at the Church at 10 a.m. prior to the services.
