Graveside services for Richard Stratton “Sonny” Hobson, Jr., 84, of Greenville will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 8 in Greenville Cemetery. He died peacefully at his home Friday, April 5, 2013. Services are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.
Sonny was born on August 8, 1928 in Grenada, MS to Richard S. Hobson and Robbie Aven Hobson, both of whom preceded him in death. Sonny spent his childhood in Grenada and Leflore County where he was educated in the public schools of Grenada and Greenwood. After serving in the military, Sonny was engaged in the exterminating business and the lighting business. Most recently Sonny and his wife owned Hobson Silver Gallery from which they retired. For many years after retirement Sonny enjoyed many memorable times with his good friend, Earl H. Triplett at Mentone Plantation on Lake Washington, Glen Allan, MS.
Sonny was married to Bobbie Jean Davidson for 56 years prior to her death on March 8, 2012. They had 2 daughters, Jean Stratton Hobson Dillard and Sarah Anne Hobson, both of whom predeceased Sonny and Bobbie Jean. He is survived by 2 granddaughters, Sarah Lauren Dillard Mason of Murfreesboro, TN and formerly of Jackson, MS and Katherine Jean Dillard of Herndon, VA. He is also survived by his cousins, Lura Johnson Triplett of Memphis, TN, Otis Johnson, Jr. of Ridgeland, MS, Betty Sue Aven Pruitt of Memphis, TN, and Ann Howard Aven Walker of Greenwood, MS.
A visitation will be held at the graveside following the services on Monday. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942 or a charity of choice.
