Monzelle (Monty) Wooten, 94, died on May 2, 2026, at her residence in Greenville, MS, and has gone home to be with her savior, Jesus Christ. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on May 9, 2026, at the Stronghope Baptist Cemetery in Stronghope, MS. Arrangements are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville, MS.
Monty Wooten was born in Copiah County on March 27, 1932. She was the daughter of William Houston Wooten and Monzelle Evelyn Thatcher Wooten. She graduated from Copiah Lincoln Agricultural High School in 1950 and Copiah Lincoln Junior College in 1952. She began her career working in Vicksburg, MS, for Selective Service System, Local Board 81, until it closed in 1975. She then worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers Mississippi River Commission, where she retired. Monty was a member of First Baptist Church of Vicksburg, MS, and the Deborah Sunday School class. She had many good times with family and friends at Lake Claiborne, where she lived much of her life in Port Gibson, MS.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Houston Wooten; her mother, Monzelle Evelyn Thatcher Wooten; and her brother, Sunny Wooten. She is survived by her sister, Sharon Brent of Greenville, MS; two nieces Melanie Maresco (Bill) of Port Orange, FL and Rhonda Lewis (Ricky) of Greenville, MS; a nephew, Gregory Wooten of Jacksonville, FL; great nephews Hayden Lewis (Michelle) of Maumelle, AR, Michael Maresco (Kara) of Port Orange, FL, Mark Maresco (Krissa) of Warner Robins, GA, and Jarrett Maresco of Melbourne, FL; and great, great niece Eden Lewis of Maumelle, AR.
