Graveside services for Maurine Weinberg Lipnick, 98, of Indianola will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 3, 2013 at Greenville Jewish Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Hebrew Union Temple followed by a visitation in the Temple Assembly Hall. She died Friday, March 1, 2013. Arrangements are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Indianola. Mrs. Lipnick was born in Indianola, the only child of Ethel and Abe Weinberg. She was the 3rd generation of her family to live in Indianola. She was a long-time civic leader, was a merchant and a teacher of Latin and Math, not retiring from teaching until she was 86 years old. She was a graduate of the University of Mississippi where she was president of the Women’s Student Government and was a member of the Women’s basketball team. A member of many Indianola civic clubs, Mrs. Lipnick served for 50 years on the Municipal Election Commission and as its chairperson. She was a past president of the Indianola Chamber of Commerce and in 2007 was named Indianola’s Citizen of the Year. She was co-owner of Weinberg’s, established in 1912. When the store closed in 1998, it was the oldest established retail business in Indianola. She was a member of Hebrew Union Congregation of Greenville and of its Sisterhood. She was the first and only female president of that Temple in its over 130 year history. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Melvin Lipnick. She is survived by her two daughters, Leanne Silverblatt (Alan) of Indianola and Marilyn Dattel of Gunnison; one grandson, Seth Silverblatt of Birmingham, AL; two granddaughters, Brett Friedmann (Oz) of Atlanta, GA and Merritt McGowan (Dave) of Boston, MA; and two great-grandsons Ben and Jack Friedmann.
