Patrick Aaron Dunne

Greenville – Funeral services for Patrick Aaron Dunne, 84, of Greenville, will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church, Greenville.  He died Monday, May 28, 2012 at his home.  Burial will be at the Greenville Cemetery under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville. Pat was born June 3, 1927 in Chattanooga, TN. to the late Joseph Lawrence Dunne and Louise Dunne.   He was a graduate of Jackson High School and attended Union University in Jackson, TN. He served in the U. S. Navy,144th Seabee in World War II in the Mariana Islands.  After leaving the Navy, he moved to Corinth, MS where he met the love of his life, Bonnie Bess Jones and they married in 1949.  In 1952, Pat and Bonnie moved to Greenville, where he went to work for the Delta Democrat Times.  In 1957, they opened their own business, Pat Dunne Moving and Storage, United Van Lines.  In 1968, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Movers Conference of Mississippi, Northern District. Pat was elected Mayor of Greenville in October 1963 and served as Mayor for 12 years (1964-1976).  After deciding not to run for re-election in 1976, he went to work as the Executive Director of the Mississippi Municipal Association in Jackson, MS until 1992.  He was currently employed with Pettiet Agricultural Services, Inc. in Leland, MS. In 1962, he received the Greenville Jaycees “Greenville’s Outstanding Young Man of the Year” award.  In 1969, he was elected to serve as the President of the Mississippi Municipal Association.  He also served on the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greenville and the Homemakers Sunday School class. He was a charter member and past president of the Greenville Exchange Club; belong to and severed as Conducteur of 40 & 8; a charter member of the Loyal Order of Moose, past president of the Greenville Summer Carnival Association and a member of the Elk’s Lodge.  He also was the Director of the Delta Golden Gloves for nine years.  He was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post 32, a lifetime member of the VFW, and was a member of the Wahabi Shrine, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite and Greenville Lodge # 406 Mason. He also served as Past President and was a charter member of the Greenville Toastmasters and a member of the Greenville Yacht Club. He was preceded in death by his wife and partner of 61 years, Bonnie Jones Dunne; brother Joseph Lawrence Dunne, Jr.; and a sister Margaret Dunne Fleming. He is survived by one son, Patrick Aaron Dunne, Jr. (Angie) of Fort Payne, AL; one daughter Donna Dunne Pettiet (Clinton) of Greenville; three grandchildren, Patrick Aaron Dunne, III of Gulfport, MS, Mary Katherine Dunne of Birmingham, AL and Aaron Hollis (Jessica), stationed at Eielson AFB, Alaska. Active pallbearers will be David Shamoon, Reaves Shamoon, Ed Grassi, Andy Forte, Louis Oursler, Donnie Maranto, and Charles Tackett.  Honorary pallbearers will be the Homemakers Sunday School class, Dr. Leon Lenior, Dr. Michael Cirilli and Dr. Maroun E. Hayek. Visitation will be from 5 to 7p.m, Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Boone Funeral Home, Greenville and 10 to 11a.m. at the First United Methodist Church. Pat’s family would like to thank the staff at Delta Regional Medical Center Home Health & Hospice (especially Trudy Giesbrecht, Sara Jones and Marva Fields).
