Funeral Services for William Gerald “Gerry” Claxton 87, of Deatsville, AL and formerly of Clinton, MS, will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, MS. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 26, 2022. Burial will be in the Greenville Cemetery under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.
He was born on June 4, 1934 in Birmingham, AL to Perry and Mary (Scott) Claxton. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Billye Edwards Pace.
Gerry was a lifelong music educator and beloved mentor to many singers, choir directors, musicians and others. After graduating from Howard College ( now Sanford University ) Gerry continued his studies at the University of Texas where he received his master’s. He was a voice professor at Mississippi College for over 30 years. Upon retirement, he continued his work at the University of Southern Mississippi. Throughout his career he served numerous churches as organist and choir director. Gerry gave private lessons until his death.
An avid gardener, Gerry was an accomplished musician whose love of life was expressed in his music. He had no greater joy than the successes of his students, many of whom he formed deep and lasting friendships.
Gerry is survived by his sister, Nancy Riddle McCoy, numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews, nieces, and great-great nephews and nieces.
There will be a visitation from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday prior to the funeral service at the church.
