Funeral services for Harmon Douglas Parker, 88, of Wayside will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 25, 2022, at First Assembly of God in Greenville. He died Monday, June 20, 2022, at his home. Burial will be in the County Line Cemetery, Glen Allan under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.
He was born in Silver City, MS to C. D. and Florence Parker, moving to the Lake Washington area at Foote, MS at an early age. He attended Chatham grammar school, finishing high school at Glen Allan. While in school he was active in the 4-H club. In 1947 he purchased sheep through a Sears Roebuck sponsored project, raising champion and Grand Champion lambs. He was recognized in the Progressive Farmer, in the years of 1948 and 1949 for these lambs. These Champion lambs were shown in the Washington County Junior Livestock Show. He also did all his own shearing.
Mr. Parker served in the U.S. Army with the 7th Armored division in Germany during the Korean Conflict, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. In 1956 he was honorably discharged. After his discharge he worked for Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company as towboat operator until 1965. In 1964 he married Lois Dockens of Irvington, AL, moving to Greenville, MS in 1965 where he worked for U.S. Gypsum Company until his retirement in 1996 with 30 plus years of service. He worked for Boone Funeral Home from 1997 until 2018.
He was an active member of First Assembly of God serving as Deacon for many years. He was also an avid gardener.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lois in 2020; and a sister, Bonnie Florine Smith.
He is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Parker Rayburn (Tony) of Florence, MS; a son, Michael D. Parker (Melissa) of Brandon, MS; sister, Barbara Brenner (Benny) of Bastrop, LA; brother, Zane Parker (Betty) of Greenville, MS and 6 grandchildren, Amber Rayburn (Michael), Anthony Rayburn (Jessica), Tacie Parker Layton (Aaron), Keith Kerr, Krissi Wright (Mario), and Tayler Gay; and 11 great grandchildren.
There will be a visitation from 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church.
