Doris Elaine Stevens

Graveside services for Doris Elaine Stevens, 88, of Oklahoma City, OK and formerly of Glen Allan will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 31 at Greenfield Cemetery, Glen Allan. She died, Monday, December 28 at Lakes Care Center in Oklahoma City, OK. 

Mrs. Stevens was born November 13, 1927 in Purvis, MS to Gustave Earnest and B’La Maxwell Newman.  Later the family moved to Rolling Fork, MS where Doris completed her high school education.  Upon graduation she was immediately recruited by the Federal Farm Home Administration in Glen Allan, MS.   It was there that she met and married her husband, Leo (Diddy) Stevens, and their only child, Patricia was born.

The family built a successful Standard Oil Wholesale and retail dealership and a substantial farming operation.

Doris was elected Justice Court Judge District 1 in Washington County once revealed she was known affectionately as “THE JUDGE”.  Doris worked for a period of time at the Glen Allan Gin and also had a grocery store that she operated in Glen Allan.

She was a master of many things.  She always found time to make sure that on Friday nights she would be at the football games or basketball games no matter how tired she was after a hard day’s work.  Doris was an avid Mississippi State football fan and loved Charter trips to New Orleans  in support of the Saints.

Following her husband’s death, Doris chose to sell her Mississippi home and relocate to be closer to her family. 

Doris was an avid gardener.  She loved to grow beautiful flowers and managed to lovingly care for them.

She is preceded in death by one sister, Lillian Newman Mitchell of Vicksburg, MS,3 brothers, Gustave Earnest Newman, Jr. of Rolling Fork, MS, Virgil Eugene Newman of Roswell, NM, and Brian Maxwell Newman of Ocean Springs, MS and a granddaughter, Shannon Reese.

Mrs. Stevens is survived by her daughter, Patricia Stevens Garvey (Lonny) of Belding, MI; 2 granddaughters, Shawn Reese Lewis (Eric) of Gillette, WY and Heather Reese of Longmont, CO; sister, Frances Newman Beales (David) of Summerville, SC.

There will be a visitation after the graveside services at Glen Allan Methodist Church.
