Graveside Services for Anthony Salvatore Vazzana, 86, of Leland will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Leland-Stoneville Cemetery. He passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at Delta Regional Medical Center. Arrangements are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Leland.
Mr. Vazzana was born in Baltimore, MD, moving to Leland , MS at the age of 3 with his parents, where he graduated from Leland High School. He attended Delta State University and received a bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Ole Miss in 1956 and soon became an owner/partner in Turner’s Pharmacy, the largest drugstore by volume in Greenville at that time. He worked there until retirement in 1982. He also served as a pharmacist in the U. S. Air Force Reserve at the Greenville Air Force Base and was briefly stationed in Colorado.
Mr. Vazzana had a love for his alma mater. He designated to the University of Mississippi two Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts. Given as a memorial in honor of his parents, Sam and Mary G. Vazzana, the gifts will provide scholarships for pharmacy students and support the Manning Family Fund for a Healthier Mississippi at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Planned gifts award donors membership in the 1848 Society, named for the year the university welcomed its first students. The society recognizes those who thoughtfully provide for the university through bequests and deferred gifts.
Mr. Vazzana was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church in Leland; a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, Mississippi State Pharmaceutical Association, a life member of the University of Mississippi Alumnus Association, a member of the Ole Miss Rebel Club, and the Italian Club.
He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Anita V. Bertuccini of Metairie, LA.
