Carolyn Hobart Nelson

Funeral services for Carolyn Hobart Nelson, a lifelong resident of Washington County, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, September 12 at Avon United Methodist Church.  She died Tuesday, September 10th at Delta Regional Medical Center, after a prolonged illness.  Burial will follow in the Greenfield Cemetery in Glen Allan.  Services are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.

Carolyn was born on August 12, 1934 in Greenville, MS and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Delta Sate University.  She taught first grade at Riverside Elementary for many years, as did her mother before her and one of her daughters after her. She always fondly remembered and was elated to see each of her former students.

Above all else, Carolyn loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was deeply devoted to her family. She was married for 61 years to the love of her life, Thomas Howard “Boots” Nelson. Together they had 4 children, 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Carolyn and Boots’ lives have always been centered around family activities. There was never anything that brightened Carolyn’s world like a family gathering. If they weren’t attending or hosting a large family gathering, they could usually be found with their best friends, Carolyn’s brother and his wife, Chalmers and Rachel Hobart or traveling across the country with Billy and Dutchie Nipper.

Carolyn also loved attending Mississippi State football games with her family and many Delta friends.

She was a life-long member of Avon United Methodist Church and was very active in all aspects of church activities for many years.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. CD Hobart, a sister, Corrie Ann Hobart Tavenner, and an infant grandson, Sam King.  She is survived by her husband, Thomas Howard “Boots” Nelson; her children, Tommy Nelson (Barbara), Lisa Nelson King (George), Melissa Nelson Lambourn (Roger), and Lori Nelson McPherson (Kent); her grandchildren, Kathryn Nelson Sharpe (Baine), Trey Nelson (Casey), Toni Lynn Nelson, Boots Nelson, Walt King, Caroline King Haynes (Chip), Caitlin King Walker (Reid), Nelson King, Robin Lambourn (Hayley), Morgan Lambourn Garrett (Grant), Dodger Lambourn, Chase McPherson (Jordan), Meg McPherson Stalnaker (Adam), and Adam McPherson; 9 great-grandchildren; her brother, Chalmers Hobart (Rachel); and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held one hour before services at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Avon United Methodist Church playground fund.
