Memorial services for Cheryl Joyce Rester, lovingly known as “Granny Rester,” will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Boone Funeral Home in Greenville. There will be a visitation from 12:30 p.m. until service time. She passed away on May 20, 2025, at the age of 79.
Born in the Reform Community of Choctaw County, Mississippi, Cheryl was the daughter of Alan and Cleo Richardson. She graduated from Ackerman High School, where she was a cheerleader and standout basketball player, and went on to attend Belhaven University.
She lived in Greenville, Mississippi, for the last 50 years. She was a firecracker, independent, stubborn, quick to speak her mind, and even quicker to love. Her presence was loud in the best way, and her loyalty to those she loved was unwavering.
A devoted sports fan, Cheryl especially loved the Mississippi State Bulldogs. One of her greatest joys was traveling to Omaha to cheer on the Dawgs in the College World Series. But nothing made her prouder than her family. She rarely missed a game, performance, or milestone when it came to her children and grandchildren, and her pride in them was immeasurable.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alan and Cleo Richardson; her brothers Gerald, Ross, and Don Richardson; and her sisters Juanita Adams and Joanne McMinn. She is survived by her sister, Janice Tyler.
Cheryl’s greatest legacy is her family: Her sons, Jay Rester (Juli Cox Rester) and Hugh Rester (Stephanie Oberle Rester); her grandchildren, Rivers Rester Hughey, Raines Rester, Jacob Rester, and Alex Rester; and her many extended family members and friends who will miss her deeply.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Camp Looking Glass, P.O. Box 392, Greenville, MS 38702.
