Funeral services for Chester Biggs Hubbard, 88, of Greenville will be at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 7 at Boone Funeral Home, Greenville. While at home with his family, he went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday morning April 30. Arrangements are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.
Chester was born in Iuka, MS on January 6, 1929 to Chester and Sadie Hubbard. The family later moved to Gunnison, MS. When he wasn’t pickin’ cotton, Chester was playing football or baseball at Gunnison High School. At the age of 17, Chester laid down his 11’ sack, walked out of the Mississippi Delta cotton fields and into the Korean War to proudly serve his country. He served in the Air Force for 20 years; he then served the community of Greenville for 20 years as a firefighter. After that Mr. Hubbard enjoyed 28 years of retirement!
In 1952, after only a 4-month courtship, Chester married Barbara Jean Guthrie from Tupelo; they were married for 63 years. They raised a son; moved often because of his military job, and finally settled in Greenville in the late 60’s. Chester loved his family and his church, played lots of golf, and enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden. His fertile garden spot is now laid fallow, but the fruits of his life will continue.
Chester was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Hubbard, father, Chester Hubbard, mother, Sadie Lawson, stepfather, Emmett Lawson, brothers, John D. Hubbard and Sammie Hubbard and a niece, Jane Harbin. Left to cherish his memory are his son, Don Hubbard, daughter-in-law, Sheri Hubbard, granddaughter, Kristen Hubbard, nieces Jeanette Quay and Julie Nall, a nephew, John D. Hubbard, Jr. and other family and friends.
There will be a visitation one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
