Christine Leggett Beckwith

Funeral services for Christine Leggett Beckwith, 88, of Oxford and formerly of Greenville will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 31, 2014 at First United Methodist Church.  She died Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Oxford Health and Rehab, Oxford, MS.  Burial will be in Greenville Cemetery under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.

Mrs. Beckwith was born in Covington County, MS to Thomas Howard and Dovie Coulter Leggett of Collins, MS, who preceded her in death.  In 1946 she married Bobby Paul Beckwith of Greenville who also preceded her in death on July 6, 2011.  She was a lifelong Methodist, becoming an active member of Greenville First United Methodist Church after her marriage.  She served as a Sunday School teacher for many years, president of United Methodist Women, member of Administrative Council, past president of Parish Relations Committee, Worship Committee, Communion Steward, Lenten Services Committee, and worked with MYF.  She was past president of Alice Bell Garden Club, past president of Council of Greenville Garden Clubs, Past Matron E.N. Thomas OES, past member and Block Captain of Greenville Pride/Keep Greenville Beautiful Committee.  She and her husband were owners of J. G. Lusk Company, Brokers of Cottonseed and Soybean products and grains, which was a nationwide trading industry in which she had the distinction of being the only woman broker in the industry.  She is listed in several biographies including, Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the South, and Who’s Who in Business and Finance.

She is survived by two sons, David Beckwith of Little Torch Key, FL and William “Bill” Beckwith (Jackie) of Taylor, MS; a brother, Granville Leggett of Jacksonville, FL; 2 grandchildren, Aimee Beckwith of Long Beach, CA and Clay Beckwith of Cleveland, MS and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church.  The Rev. Walter Goldsmith will officate. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 402 Washington Avenue, Greenville, MS  38701.
