Funeral services for Eugene Owen “Sonny” Mitchell, Sr., 86, of Greenville will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 12 at St. James Episcopal Church. He died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 9.
Sonny was born January 29, 1930. He graduated from Columbia Military Academy and attended University of Mississippi. After college he served in the National Guard. Living in Greenville, Sonny was an active and dedicated member of St. James Episcopal Church, and served as a member of Lions and Rotary Club. Of his many accomplishments in life, his most prized was co-founding the Ole Miss-Mississippi State Tennis Tournament, which annually raises money for scholarships for local students to attend one of our state’s two major University’s. He was a huge fan of all things Ole Miss.
Sonny will be remembered for his gracious smile, and his warm and welcoming personality.
He is preceded in death by his son Eugene Owen “Butch” Mitchell Jr. He is survived by the love of his life, wife Shirley Ann Mitchell, his daughter Lisa Caradine, her husband Scott, and his grandchildren Haley and Miles, sister, Dabney R. Holt and husband Phillip and brother, Charles A. Mitchell. Sonny is also survived by two daughters Carol Butler and Debbie Tease.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. The Family would like to thank Delta Regional Hospice for their care of Sonny.
