Funeral Mass for Fred William Abide, Jr., 78, of Leland will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at St. James Catholic Church in Leland. He died Wednesday, January 24, 2024, from complications of dementia. Burial will be in the Greenville Cemetery.
Freddy, as he was known to family and friends, was born March 5, 1945, in Greenville, Mississippi, and grew up in Leland. He was a 1963 graduate of St. Joseph High School and a 1967 graduate of The University of Notre Dame. After college, Fred returned to Leland where he was involved in the family furniture and appliance business.
A lifelong fisherman, Fred also was an accomplished amateur “ham” radio operator (K5FA) and enjoyed cooking, gardening, and storytelling. He was an avid “tinkerer” building works, both functional and artistic, from found objects. He was a communicant at St. James Catholic Church in Leland.
Fred is preceded in death by parents Fred William Abide, Sr., and Emily Tonos Abide. He is survived by his brothers John of Jackson, Joe of Oxford and George (Callista) of Golden Valley, MN. Also survived by nephews Jason, Daniel, Leland (Lisia Rollman), Jackson and Bennett and niece Rebecca (Kevin Boggs).
Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday before the funeral mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a charity of your choice.
