Herbert Hartwell Huddleston, Jr.

A Memorial Service for Herbert Hartwell Huddleston, Jr., 84, a lifelong resident of Winterville, Mississippi, will be held at First United Methodist Church of Greenville on February 27, 2021, at 2:00 PM. He died February 14th at Delta Regional Medical Center. Arrangements are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.

Herbert was born on October 27, 1936, to Herbert H. Huddleston Sr. and Doris Draper Huddleston of Lamont, MS. Herbert graduated in 1953 from the last graduating class of E.E. Bass High School in Greenville. Herbert lived and worked on his family farm all his life. He served in the Mississippi National Guard and graduated from Mississippi State University in 1957. Herbert married his high school sweetheart, Sondra Dismuke, on February 7, 1958. Herbert and Sondra made their home on the family farm where they lived together for 63 years.

Herbert was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Greenville. He currently served on the Board of Directors for the Yazoo Management District, Farmers Incorporated, and Farmers Grain Terminal. In the past, Herbert served on the Executive Board of Washington School, was a Supervisor for Washington County, was a member of the Rotary Club of Greenville, was Past-President of Washington County Farm Bureau, was President of the Washington School Board, and served on the Trustmark Bank Board for 22 years. Herbert was also a founding member of the Greenville Cypress Preserve Trust. Herbert had many state and local honors, some of which were Young Farmer of Washington County, Young Farmer of Mississippi, 1988 Farmer of the Year in Mississippi, King of the Junior Auxiliary Ball, 1993 Conservation Farmer of the Year, and 2005 Land Bank South Farmer of the Year.

Herbert was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He spent many years hunting at Montgomery Island, Delta Twin Lakes, Archer Island, and Ashbrooke Hunting Club. Herbert was a member of Greenville Golf and Country Club, where his 3.0 tennis team was the Southern Section Tennis Champions in 1987. Herbert and Sondra were also members of the Bon Vivant Dinner Club. 

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Sondra, who passed away on June 1, 2020. Also, preceding Herbert in death were his sisters, Mary Draper Huddleston Crump and Dot Huddleston Haddock. He is survived by his sons Hartwell (Jodie) Huddleston of Leland, MS, and William (Monica) Huddleston of Greenville, MS. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Huddleston of Kettering, OH, Sergeant Herbert (Bert) Huddleston, IV of Clarksville, TN, William (Cass) Huddleston of Lamont, MS, and Elizabeth (Faith) Huddleston of Lake Village, AR.

Pallbearers are Shafer Bell, Cass Huddleston, Bert Huddleston, Landon Pieroni, Sanfrid Shaifer, and Kenner Patton. 

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to his sitters, Freddie Payne Wilson, Sandra Norman, and Jerald Wofford. Thank you to Dr. Hayek, Dr. Folk, Dr. Gillespie of Greenville, and Dr. Matt Jones, and Tammy Davis at Baptist Wound Center in Jackson. Last, but not least, Julia Pickett, the best nurse anyone could ask for.
