James Howell “Jimmy” Sutherland Jr., age 84, of Greenville, Mississippi transitioned peacefully on Wednesday, March 27th, 2024, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. Born in Canton, Mississippi on July 26, 1939, Jimmy embarked on a life journey filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering dedication to his loved ones and his community.
Jimmy graduated from Canton High School in 1957. He then graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a bachelor’s degree. From 1962 to 1965, Jimmy bravely served his country in the United States Navy aboard a destroyer during the Vietnam War, demonstrating courage and valor in the face of adversity.
Upon returning home, Jimmy found his professional calling at Mississippi Farm Bureau, where he served as a claims adjuster for Washington County for 22 years. His larger-than-life personality and genuine compassion endeared him to all who crossed his path. Jimmy’s mantra, “Call if you need anything!” embodied his selfless nature, always ready to lend a helping hand without hesitation. His jovial self could be heard around town saying to put his lunches on someone else’s tab, always the one to make a quick joke.
Jimmy was a devoted member of St. James Episcopal Church where he generously shared his time and talents. From serving on the Vestry to co-chairing raffles, his dedication was evident. He enjoyed acting as a stand-in receptionist after his retirement. In addition to his church involvement, Jimmy volunteered yearly with the Washington County Salvation Army’s Annual Christmas party. He was a member of Greenville’s Elks Lodge. Jimmy’s commitment to serving others knew no bounds.
His love for sports, particularly horse racing, brought him immense joy. His presence at Oaklawn Park Racing in Hot Springs, Arkansas was a testament to his passion for life. Jimmy could always be found with the latest football line and an extra betting sheet to share with others. With Jimmy’s zest for life, quick witted humor, love for family, friends, and his community, he was the TRUE Superfecta.
Jimmy’s greatest joy, however, stemmed from his cherished family and friends. He deeply valued his wife, Susan Wood Sutherland, and took immense pride in his daughter, Daynie Sherrie Sutherland, and his stepdaughter Laura Torrance Castanza. Jimmy’s siblings, Jane Sutherland Smith (Dr. Robert Allen Smith) and Sondra Sutherland Holman (the late William Henry Holman, Jr.), along with his nieces and nephews, held a special place in his heart. In addition to his parents, James and Faye Hyde Sutherland, Jimmy is proceeded in death by his grandparents Charles and Ella Jane Hyde and John and Daynie Sutherland.
In honor of Jimmy’s legacy of kindness and generosity, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to St. James Episcopal Day School in Greenville, Mississippi. His memory will forever remain a beacon of light, guiding us through life’s journey with unwavering grace, humor, and love.
