James Thomas Johnson

Memorial services for James Thomas “Tommy” Johnson, 62, of Leland will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 21, 2013 at First Baptist Church, Leland.  He died Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at Delta Regional Medical Center.  Arrangements are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Leland.

Tommy was born in Blytheville, AR moving to Greenville where he graduated from Greenville High School.  In 1974 he married Nan Mooney making their home in Greenville until moving to Leland in 1992.  He was engaged in farming, managing Greenland Plantation until 1999.  He then owned and operated Leland Tire Company until 2001.  They moved to Georgia where he attended Mercer University in Macon and graduated with a B.S. in Education.  He then received his Masters degree in Education also from Mercer.  He earned a Specialist degree in Technology and Leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He had taught middle school math and science for seven years. He had been writing his dissertation to complete his doctorate in May 2014. 

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Leland where he was a deacon.

He is survived by his wife Nan M. Johnson of Leland; a daughter Lyn Johnson of Moorhead; a son, Jay Johnson of Spring Hill, TN; his mother, Alta Blessing Johnson of Greenville; sister, Sandra Sides of Greenville; 2 brothers, Brent Johnson of Wayside and Tony Johnson of Kosciusko; 2 grandsons, Austin McGonagill of Greenville and Jace McGonagill of Macon, GA; granddaughter, Alexandra Beckett Johnson of Spring Hill, TN and a great grandson, Shane McGregor of Greenville.

The family will receive friends from one hour prior to services a the church.
