Joan Ambrose Clower

Former Leland resident, Joan Ambrose Clower, 92, passed away July 23, 2023, at Gallaway Health and Rehab in Gallaway, TN. Arrangements are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.

Joan was born on April 30, 1931, in Memphis, TN. She was the daughter of Henry and Kathleen Ambrose.

She later married William “Bill” Mancill Clower making their home in Leland where she was very active in the community. She was Cub Master for the Boy Scouts as well as a Troop Leader for the Girl Scouts and was president of the garden club. She was very involved in the Leland Lions Club especially when Bill was President.

She worked as an enumerator for the US Government in the 1980s and 1990s. Joan and Bill lived in a large house on Garrison which was a meeting place for many of their friends. Buddy and Nancy Tate, Rex and Nell Livingston, Joe and Shirley Miller, Ben and Annette Ray, and many others spent nights and weekends at the Clower home for fun and fellowship. Summers were spent on Lake Ferguson where they enjoyed skiing and moon boarding.

They also enjoyed traveling through Florida with their large group of friends and attending racing at Daytona Speedway and traveling to Clearwater, FL staying at the prestigious Jack Tar Hotel.

She was a member of ARP Presbyterian Church in Millington, TN, where she resided prior to becoming ill in May of this year.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents as well as her oldest son, William “Wild Bill” Mancill Clower, Jr.

She is survived by her sons, John Roberson Henry Clower (Laura) and Howard Everett Clower; two grandchildren, William Henry “Hank” Clower and Jessie Mae Clower; and two great-children, Henry Cole Clower and Harrison James Clower.
