Memorial services for John McEachern Read, Sr. of Leland will be held at a later date. He passed away peacefully from complications of Covid 19 at South Sunflower County Hospital on January 13, 2021. Services are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Leland.
John was born on September 13, 1931 in Carroll County, MS. He graduated valedictorian from J.Z. George High School in Carrollton, MS. John graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi College, a master’s from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and received a specialist degree in counseling from Mississippi State University. He retired as a Field Representative with the Mississippi State Employment Security Commission. John served as a bi-vocational pastor for over 60 years. He was also a life-long cattleman.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robye and Bessie Read and sister Gene Read Seals.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years Frances Gower Read, his daughter Joy (Charles) Henderson, his son John (Marilyn) Read, granddaughters Meredith (Richard) Turner and Elizabeth (Caleb) Whites, and great grandchildren Eli Turner, Bonnie Mae Turner, Anne-Read Whites and soon to arrive Kate Whites. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Leland Building Fund or Operation Christmas Child Fund.
