June Gorton Hammond

June Gorton Hammond, 92, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and servant of Christ, passed away on June 19, 2019.  Graveside services will be conducted Monday, June 24, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., at Greenville Cemetery and will be officiated by Rev. John T. Burke.  Arrangements are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.

June was preceded in death by her parents, Jennie Lee and Doy Gorton, her sister, Ellen “Chick” Gorton Daniels, and her husband, Vernon Hammond, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Ellen “Honey” Sammons (Cecil) of Collierville, Tennessee and son, Vernon Allen Hammond of New Orleans, Louisiana; her brother, D. Gorton and wife, Jane Adams of Carbondale, Illinois; grandchildren, Carrie Makamson of Grenada, Mississippi, Shea Hammond of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Claire Vega of Meridian, Mississippi, and Ellen Smith of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and many great-grandchildren.

June was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on April 19th, 1927, lived most of her life in Greenville, Mississippi, and is an alumnus of Belhaven College. June and Vernon were long-time members of First United Methodist Church of Greenville, MS, where June served as Sunday School Teacher, member of Church Council, Church Librarian, Secretary of Christian Homemakers, and a life-member of The United Methodist Women (UMW).  In later years, they attended First Baptist Church of Greenville, MS, and were members of Sunday School Classes and Senior Adult Activities.

June enjoyed playing bridge and MahJong, was a member of Delta Art Association, Belvedere DAR, Grenada Chapter DAR, was a State Life Member of Colonial Garden Club and a Master Gardener. She was the founder/owner of Keepsakes Lace in Greenville, MS.
