Lela Rose Selby Grissom

Funeral services for Lela Rose Selby Grissom, 97, of Leland will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 8 at Leland United Methodist Church.  She died Thursday, December 4 at her home in Leland.  Burial will be in Leland-Stoneville Cemetery under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Leland.

Lela was born in 1917 at Valley in Yazoo County, Mississippi to Daniel Clarence and Mary Guion Selby. At the age of six the family moved to Yazoo City where she grew up, attended school and graduated from Yazoo High School. She then attended Whitworth Junior College in Brookhaven.

For eight years she worked in Lexington at the Federal Land Bank and there she met and later married Perrin H. Grissom on Aug. 10, 1941. They moved to Stoneville in 1946 and to Leland in 1960 where they reared their three children, Virginia Anne, Linda Jean (Nonnie) and Perrin, Jr.

Lela was a member of the Leland Methodist Church where she served as church secretary, a member of the choir, a Sunday School teacher, an officer of the women’s circle. She was active in various bridge clubs and was a life member of the Leland-Deer Creek Garden Club where she served as president, secretary and treasurer. As a lifetime member of the DAR, she served as regent and held several other offices, and was also an active member of the Cotton Wives.

Together she and her husband of 71 years, who preceded her in death, were active members of the Mississippi Seniors and enjoyed playing golf with many friends from around the South. They loved Mississippi State, attending football and baseball games for many decades.

Both were devoted to their only grandchild, Luci, her husband Brian Henry and to their four boys, Bronson, Logan, Nicholas and Hayes.  They are also survived by their devoted angels, Dr. John Louwerens, Dotti Lowe and Dorothy Wilson.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church.
