Maie Pope Bell

A memorial service for Maie Pope Bell, 97, of Leland, Mississippi will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 10, at Leland United Methodist Church. She entered her home in heaven on August 7, 2022. A private family interment will be in Leland-Stoneville Cemetery, Stoneville, under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Leland.

Mrs. Bell was the daughter of Bessie Curtiss Buder Sherrod and Henry Pope Sherrod. Though born in Columbus, she and her family moved to Meridian when she was a baby. Soon after World War II, she married James Oscar Bell, Jr., also a Meridianite. In 1951, they moved to Leland. She was a long-time faithful member of Leland United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Deer Creek Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. In early years, she was actively involved in Leland Junior Auxiliary, Deer Creek Garden Club, and Riverside Cotton Wives. Other interest included following her boy’s sporting events, rooting for MSU, sewing, cooking, and playing bridge.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Melissa Sherrod Taylor and her brother-in-law James Edwin “Jamie” Taylor.

She is survived by three sons, Henry Pope Bell, James Oscar “Jamie” Bell, III (Marla), and David Leslie Bell (Laura); grandchildren Lindsey Taylor Bell, Shaifer Pope Bell, Shattuck James Bell (Cricket), Ransome Meyer Bell, Ashley Farmer Culbertson (Jack), and Andrew Madison Farmer (Brinkley) and four great grandchildren. She also leaves a niece Lynn Taylor Baker (Ernie) and a nephew Richard Sherrod Taylor (Amy), who with their children affectionately called her “Pee Pop”.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, at the home of Jamie and Marla Bell, 404 S. Deer Creek Drive West in Leland. They request that memorials be made to Leland United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 129, Leland, Mississippi 38756.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Lee Frankel, Robert Holland, Martin Walker, Yancy Deloach, David Simmons, Guy O’Reilly, Stanley Ayres, Richard Cousino, Chip Morgan, David Kazan, Martin Flanagan, Culpepper Webb, Dean Cumbaa, Terry Gibbs, Perrin Grisom, Kirk Manning, Darrell Livingston, Joe Nash and Hartwell Huddleston.
