Funeral services for Melvin Dunn Hughes, 95, of Greenville will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 24 at Boone Funeral Home, Greenville. He died Sunday, January 20 at his home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.
Mr. Hughes was born in Bellfountaine, MS where he graduated high school and later moved to Bridgeport, CT where entered into the Merchant Marines, serving from 1943 to 1946. After his discharge he married Nora Phillips and they made their home in Greenville where he managed the National Cash Register retiring in 1985. Mr. Hughes was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as Deacon. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of Huntington Point Hunting Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2009. He is survived by two daughters, Melinda Harmon (David) of Greenville and Cheryl LaFoe (Macon) of Monroe, LA; son, David Hughes (Mimi) of Greenville; sister, Mary Kathleen Clark of Hernando; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Giddens (Ryan), Macon LaFoe II (Casey), Martha Ulmer (Will), Jennifer Watts (Jeremy), Douglas Harmon, David Hughes, Jr. (Templete) and Leslie Sullivan (David) and ten great grandchildren, Katelyn Giddens, Parker Giddens, Trip LaFoe, Macey LaFoe, Will Ulmer II, Prentiss Watts, AnnElise Hughes, Landon Hughes, Trey Sullivan and AnnMarie Sullivan.
The family would like to thank the caregivers that provided care for Mr. Hughes, Corinne Chapman, Gloria Chapman, Diane Taylor, Connie Walker and Ethel Murray and a special thanks to Dr. Thompson.
There will be a visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
