A celebration of life for Melvin E. Hughes of Leland will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Boone Funeral Home in Leland, Mississippi. He died Tuesday, June 6.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Bettie Bloom and Melvin G. Hughes. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sammie Fay Hughes; his three daughters, Bridget (Donnie) Anderson of Destin, Florida; Sunshine (Josh) Willis of Bend, Oregon; and Kelly Hughes of Leland, Mississippi; his two grandsons, Kodie Dunn and Sailor Anderson of Destin, Florida; one great-grandson, Elijah Dunn of Destin, Florida; his brother, John (Joy) Hughes of Greenville, Mississippi; his sister, Marianna Miller of Eudora, Arkansas; and a large extended family.

Melvin was born in Crossett, Arkansas and moved to Mississippi at a young age where he attended school. He graduated from Mississippi Delta Community College and was an electrician with Mississippi Marine.

Melvin loved his family very much. He had many blessings in life but considered his three daughters his biggest blessings. He loved being outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending time at his hunting camp, Walk About Creek, every weekend.

Melvin never met a stranger and was a friend to all. He was very kind and always generous. His generosity will continue even after his death through his gift of organ donation. He will live on through the numerous people that have received this gift of life.

The family would like to extend many thanks to the staff at the University of Mississippi Medical Center with special gratitude to Ms. Jameeka Williams.

There will be a visitation one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. The service will be officiated by Melvin’s sister-in-law, Reverend Judy Piercey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice.
