Graveside services for Nixon Bernard Maddox, Sr., 94, of Avon will be at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Greenville Cemetery. He died Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Sharkey-Issaquena Community Hospital, Rolling Fork. Arrangements are under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.
Mr. Maddox was born in Arcola, MS moving to Avon with his parents, Manley and Ruby Nixon Maddox where they owned and operated Maddox Grocery Store. The store is still in operation by third generation, Nixon Maddox, Jr.
Mr. Maddox graduated from Riverside High School and then went to Sunflower Junior College (now Mississippi Delta Community College) and East Mississippi Junior College where he played football at both colleges. After college he moved to Pascagoula, MS where he worked for England Shipyard before he entered the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in the South Pacific and was one of the first to go into Japan after the Atomic Bombing. After his discharge he made his home in Avon and in 1953 married Adilaid Page.
He was employed with Standard Oil Company which later became Chevron Oil, retiring as Terminal Manager. Mr. Maddox was a 50 year Mason and Shriner and was a lifelong member of Avon United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife Adilaid P. Maddox of Avon; daughter, Pam Maddox Roberts of Hazelhurst, MS; son, Nixon B. Maddox, Jr. (Karon) of Avon; grandson, Lee Maddox and wife Brittany and their children, Dillon, Joseph and Emma; grandson, Trae Roberts and granddaugther, Ginger Maddox; 2 nieces, Laurie M. Gaut and Nancy M. Maddox; and a nephew, Dr. Bill F. Maddox.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Boone Funeral Home, Greenville. The family requests memorials be made to Shriners Children Hospital.
