Owen R. (Coach) Makamson

Funeral services for Owen R. (Coach) Makamson, 87, of Avon will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 18 at Boone Funeral Home, Greenville He died Saturday, December 15, 2018 at his home. Burial will be in the Greenville Cemetery.

He was born April 25, 1931 in Morgan City to Claude and Della Ray Makamson. He married Sara Myers on December 27, 1954 in Lexington. He attended Morgan City High School and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi. He served as a tanker-man during the Korean War with the U. S. Marine Corps.

Makamson coached for 35 years, spending 25 of these years at Riverside High School in Avon. Mississippi Baseball Coach of the Year in 1968-69. He was inducted in the Mississippi Coaches Hall of Fame in 1995. He was a member of the Mississippi Association of Coaches Board of Directors and served one term on the executive committee. He coached the North team in the Mississippi High School Baseball All-Star game in 1978.

He served on the Western Line School Board for 10 years and was a member of Avon United Methodist Church. He was a member of James Crossing Hunting Club where he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Randy Makamson, six brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sara Myers Makamson of Avon; three sons, David Makamson of Laurel, Kenny Makamson (Diane) of Cleveland and Todd Makamson(Barbara) of Bossier City, La; two grandsons, Jason Makamson (Mary Michael) and Jonathan Makamson (Sarah Shepherd), both of Cleveland; two great grandchildren, Sarah Hardin and William Makamson, both of Cleveland; and one sister, Janet Jochumsen of Seattle, Washington.

Pallbearers will be Chuck Makamson, Don Makamson, Ron Makamson, David Bariola, Chip Hobart, Wayne Davis, Tommy Nelson and Michael Kelly. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Nolan, Buddy Cochran, Terry Murrell, Waddell Davis, Chalmers Hobart and Billy Klemme.

There will be a visitation from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, December 17 at Avon United Methodist Church. Rev. Tony McDonald and Brother Phil Wilkerson will officiate the services.
