Raymond Stanley Murrell

Funeral mass for Raymond Stanley Murrell, 86, of Avon will be at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  He died Friday, August 15, 2014 at Delta Regional Medical Center.  Burial will be in Greenville Cemetery under the direction of Boone Funeral Home, Greenville.
 
Raymond was born in Crowley, LA on October 9, 1927 to Emelia and Joseph Murrell.  He graduated from Sulphur High School then served in the Korean Conflict.  After his discharge he returned to Winnie, TX where he farmed with his brothers.  He moved to Mississippi in 1951 where he farmed north of Leland, finally moving to Avon in 1960 where he farmed.  In 1981 he started Delta Seed and Rice.
 
Mr. Murrell was involved in Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation, Mississippi Rice Council, Mississippi Rice Promotion board and Mississippi Crop Improvement Association. 
 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bennie in 1985 and his parents, two brothers, Wayne and William and sister, Norma Nassar.  He is survived by two sons, Terry Murrell of Avon and Courtland Murrell of Starkville; 6 sisters, Gernsie Leger of Sunset, LA, Yvonne Trahan (Floyd) of Sulphur, LA, Veronica Trahan of Carlyss, LA, Francis Helmer (Clifford) of Sulphur, LA, Mary Louise LaBove (Sandrus) of Sweet Lake, LA and Stella M. Johnson (Billy) of Carlyss, LA; 3 brothers, Calvin Murrell  (Retha) , George Murrell (Joyce) and James Murrell (Linda Kaye) all of Sulphur, LA,  two grandsons, Carter Murrell (Jamie) of Arcola and Kevin Murrell (Terri) of Avon; 4 great grandchildren, Keeton, Caroline, Graylee and Emma.
 
The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
