Funeral services for Rebecca Jane (Becky) Newsom Avis, 72, of Avon will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Lake Washington First Baptist Church, Glen Allan, MS. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the church before the service. She passed away on Friday, February 9, 2024. A private interment will follow in the County Line Cemetery, Glen Allan, MS.
Becky was born in Ethel, MS on February 28, 1951, the daughter of Mrs. Loree Newsom and the late E.E. Newsom of Glen Allen. She graduated from Riverside High School in 1969, and received her BA from Mississippi State University and her Masters and Specialist degrees from Delta State University. Becky taught elementary school for 20 years and then became the elementary principal at Riverside School for another 20 years. She was an active member of Alexander Memorial Baptist Church and Western Line Board Member for 4 years. She held the office of president for Delta Kappa Gamma and enjoyed participating in the Community Bible Study Leadership.
Survivors include her daughters JJ Smith (Jamey) and Mandy Nogradi (Chris), son Jamie Avis (Allison), brothers Sam Newsom (Kaye), Jim Newsom (Penny), Bill Newsom (Sharon), seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alexander Memorial Baptist Church, 525 James Crossing Road, Hollandale, MS 38748.
