It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rhonda Louise McGhee Slaton at the age of 78. Rhonda went to be with The Lord on Friday, October 25, 2024.
She was born on August 30, 1946, in Yazoo City, MS to Grover Lee McGhee, Sr. and Vivian McGhee. Rhonda grew up in Leland, MS. In 1975 she married Kirby Thomas Slaton and they were happily married for 49 years.
Rhonda became a nurse in 1974. She found her niche in surgery and ran the Operating Room at The King’s Daughters Hospital for 25 years. Following her retirement from KDH, she continued her nursing career at Renal Care, Home Health, and Bolivar Medical Center. Rhonda was a nurse for 46 years and loved every minute of it.
Rhonda was also very active in her church. As a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for over 38 years, Rhonda was known for her cooking (especially large groups) and working in the children’s ministry. She loved her babies in Cradle Roll. When her strength began to decline and she could no longer hold the babies, her joy was to go to the nursery and pray for them.
Rhonda is survived by her husband, Kirby Thomas Slaton; her daughter, April Helms (Chris) of Leland; her only grandchild, Slaton Christopher Helms; her sister, Starr McGahey (Travis) of Rainbow City, AL; her brother, Grover Lee McGhee, Jr. (Carol) of Austin, TX; seven nieces, eight nephews, three great-nieces, seven great-nephews, and a host of great-great nieces and nephews.
Rhonda was a woman of faith, conviction, and grit. Her favorite place to be was the kitchen and she could move your soul with a meal. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Leland-Stoneville Cemetery.
