Shirley was born on May 30, 1940 in Leland and graduated from Leland High School. Her passion was being the matriarch of her family as a loyal and committed wife to Sonny for 52 years, and a mother to her kids. This included serving as a mother to all of their friends, too. She loved giving rides, taking her kids to tennis tournaments, feeding people, and entertaining for any occasion. She loved preparing huge holiday meals that could serve half the town of Greenville. Her favorite hobby was gardening, so much so that after Sonny’s retirement, together they operated a small landscape business.
Her love for the people around her will be missed by everyone who had the honor of knowing her.
She is survived by her daughter Lisa Caradine, her son-in-law Scott, her grandchildren Haley and Miles, and her brother Frank Ramsey.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Alice Ramsey; the love of her life,Eugene Owen “Sonny” Mitchell, Sr.; her son, Eugene Owen “Butch” Mitchell, Jr.; and her sister, Marilyn Burns.
The family thanks the staff at Washington Care Nursing Home for their kindness and compassion.
