Funeral services for W. Fred Davis, 90, former resident of Indianola, MS will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 27, 2014 at First Baptist Church, Indianola, in the sanctuary. He passed away Monday, February 24, 2014, at Sunnybrook Estates in Madison, MS, surrounded by his loving family. Burial will be in Indianola City Cemetery under the direction of Boone-Card Funeral Home, Indianola.
Mr. Davis was born in Indianola on February 16, 1924, and lived there for most of his life. He graduated from Indianola High School and joined the Army Air Force to help fight in World War II. He returned after 3 years in the Pacific Theater to marry his best friend and sweetheart, Dorothy Leonard Davis. They moved from Wichita Falls, Texas to Dallas, TX, while he pursued his degree at SMU. Due to his father’s health problems, he and Dot left Dallas to return to Indianola to help his family. Mr. Davis retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1986 and began his retirement years which were filled with hobbies and pursuing new endeavors. Not many folks begin piano lessons at 82!
Mr. Davis was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend. He was a Christian gentleman who served his home congregation as a deacon and in other capacities in the church for many years. His service to the country during World War II was an indication of his patriotism and his willing service to family, country, and Lord were evidence of his keen sense of duty and purpose. He also served in many civic organizations and was especially proud of his membership in the Sons of the American Revolution.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Fred Davis, Sr. and Annie Kate Stafford Davis; and sisters, Martha Davis, Virginia Davis, and Katherine Davis Williams. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dot; daughter, Cynthia A. Davis, Jackson, MS; son, Dr. Michael L. Davis (Clarissa), Vicksburg, MS, and grandchildren Evana Bock (Charlie) and Eleana Davis. Also surviving him are sisters-in-law, Illa Leonard and Cathy Hoehne; three nephews, one niece, and other “very special” family members who were dearly loved.
“Well done, good and faithful servant. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your Master.” Matthew 25:21
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Indianola, MS, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.
